How lap and split times work
A lap time is how long one section took — for example, one lap of a running track. A split time is the total time from the start up to that point. This stopwatch shows both in the lap table:
| Lap | Lap time | Total (split) | vs. previous |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 01:05.20 | 01:05.20 | — |
| 2 | 01:02.85 | 02:08.05 | −00:02.35 |
| 3 | 01:07.10 | 03:15.15 | +00:04.25 |
Once you have two or more laps, the fastest lap is highlighted in green and the slowest in orange, and the summary shows your average lap time.

How accurate is this stopwatch?
The stopwatch measures elapsed time using your browser’s high-resolution, steadily increasing clock (performance.now()) and recalculates the display from the real start time every frame. It does not count timer “ticks”, so it stays correct even when your browser slows down background tabs.
It is accurate enough for workouts, cooking, studying, presentations and everyday timing. However, a browser stopwatch depends on how quickly you press the button and on your device, so it is not a replacement for certified timing equipment used in official sports results or laboratory measurements.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use a stopwatch online?
Press Start to begin timing, Lap to record a lap, Pause to stop and Reset to clear it. On a computer you can also use the space bar and the L and R keys.
What is the difference between a lap time and a split time?
A lap time is the length of a single lap. A split time is the total elapsed time from the start to the end of that lap.
Does the stopwatch keep running if I switch tabs?
Yes. The time is calculated from when you pressed Start, so it stays correct when you switch tabs or the page is in the background.
Will I lose my time if I refresh the page?
No. The stopwatch state and laps are saved in your browser, so a refresh continues where you left off.
Can I export my lap times?
Yes. Press Copy results and paste the laps into a spreadsheet, document or message.
Can I use it in full screen?
Yes. Press Full screen or the F key to show a large display, which is useful for classrooms and gyms.
